The Shenandoah Club, the oldest continually-operating private club in the Commonwealth of Virginia, was established in 1893 by a group of Roanoke’s leading businessmen and railroad men in need of a private gathering place to relax among friends in an atmosphere of fellowship. Built in 1841 by Dr. Armand John de Rosset III, one of Wilmington’s most prominent citizens at that time, the house is a fine example of the Greek Revival style. It sits atop a knoll in the heart of the historic district, with views over its terraced gardens of the Cape Fear River. This venerable and historic pre-civil war southern mansion was completely restored in 1998 and is now the home of the City Club at de Rosset, a private club for the enjoyment of its members and their guests. Providing both fine and casual dining in multiple dining rooms, bars, lounges, meeting rooms and period gardens, the club provides an exclusive and unique facility for the enjoyment of both private and corporate members to dine and socialize.
